Whether it’s a casual athlete or a competitive athlete, most understand that nutrition can provide a winning edge in athletic performance. Nutrition can also be that missing link that allows athletes to finally perform at the level that they’ve been working so hard in their training for.
Today is your day to start eating specifically to…. Fuel your body for top performance, or lose excess body fat, or bulk up. Whatever you’re looking to do, today is your day. You got this.
Except.
For a lot of athletes they procrastinate in working with a dietitian. Why is this? Why delay in finding that missing piece? Or gaining that competitive edge over your competition? Here are some reasons for procrastination.
Reason #1 – They’re afraid a dietitian is going to make them stop enjoying their favorite foods/beverage.
I can’t speak for all dietitians, only myself, and I can assure you that I work very closely with my clients to find ways to make sure you’re eating strategy is BOTH enjoyable (with your favorites) and nourishing so that you reach all your goals and love every minute of your nutrition strategy.
Reason #2 – They’re embarrassed by their not-so-healthy eating habits.
Uhhh, I’ve heard and seen it all before. I worked for four years as a supermarket dietitian and witnessed hundreds of thousands of people’s shopping carts. I pass zero judgement on anyone’s eating habits. You’ll never see me food shaming anyone about anything they’re eating. I’m all about staying positive and solving problems with practical, realistic solutions that work for you. Please be assured there’s no need to feel guilty or ashamed or embarrassed about anything that you eat or drink.
Reason #3 – They think they know exactly what they should be eating, but just choose not to do it.
You don’t know what you don’t know. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve had conversations with athletes and this lightbulb goes off in their head when they realize there’s missing pieces to their nutrition strategy. Or they realize that they underestimated the work they needs to do to improve the fueling their body needs for training and competing.
It’s not just what you should be eating. It’s timing your nutrition right. It’s making sure that you’re not missing out on key nutrients. It’s understanding why you need to be eating and hydrating a certain way. And most importantly, it’s providing you with that accountability so that you actually follow through in eating what your body needs so you can compete with that winning edge.
There’s no time like the present. Invest in yourself.
Learn what eating strategy is going to work specifically for you (and what doesn’t). This will lead to better body composition, less chance of injury, improved performance, faster recovery (read: reduced soreness and pain!), and more confidence in the way you look and feel.
